Every journalist imagines they’re a hybrid of Upton Sinclair and Walter Cronkite, all wrapped in the package of a 40s gumshoe festooned with a fedora and rolled up newspaper.

In reality, they’ve become a function of elite parents, elite schools, elite publications funded by elite donors, and they blanche at the audacity of paying $8/month for flair on a messaging app.
